Mother; Ellenore Hanson, Trapeze artist (Deceased)

Height: 5' 9"        Weight: 168 pounds
Raul Julia Played by: Raul Julia. This late actor is mainly known for his leading role in the two Addam's Family films as Gomez Addams, and for his frenetic almost insane energy. This makes him perfect for the role of the merciful and energetic Doctor. His physical type is also perfect for my view of Doc Hanson.

Hanson is a dark man, dusky complexion, black eyes, curly black hair. He has a compact muscular build. Bright white teeth make a contrast to his dark skin giving him a winning smile.
Hanson is a refugee from his past. All of Baraboo is one big circus. It is often called "the Circus World". Early in the 22nd century the City of Baraboo was bought by a circus. In route to a performance it suffered a warp drive failure stranding the crew and passengers in an uncharted system, that happened to contain a class M world that no one knew about. The City of Baraboo, a ship bought from a failed colony attempt, landed its massive shuttles one last time and settled the unwilling colony. Baraboo remained undiscovered until the early 24th century. Everyone on Baraboo is in the circus. The performing arts are a way of life and culture. The carney life-style as a world.
Hanson's father is a skillful flyer, his mother a good flyer and overbearing matron determined to keep the family in the family business. Hanson left the house to her hysterics, and has never returned to his world of birth.

Personality: Hanson has a good grip on the good guy code, doctor edition. His ethical compass is true, and he is vocal about anyone he sees meandering from the true course. Mind you if he doesn't care about you, very few of these examples, he won't say anything. Friends get all the rough treatment. Hanson sees the performing arts as a form of prostitution, only in the open. He hates public performances, yet as a doctor he has to do one man, one audience performances daily. It's called "bedside manner". This results in his reputation for a gruff bedside manner, false cordiality grates, especially if it comes from him.
As a result, Hanson is not the lady's man you would expect from his good looks. He is harsh on the faults of others and cultivates a irascible and tenacious grip on the blunt truth as he sees it. At times he can go out of his way to be disagreeable in a small way. He is a willing student of the "Bones" McCoy school of medicine, at least as he understands it. Should McCoy meet him he would be told to "lighten up".
He can be cordial if you catch him in the right place and time. He is much more open naturally than he allows himself to be. In an effort not to act, he acts even harder.

Career: (all dates are Okuda, and subject to change.)
Early Life: Baraboo has no public education system. Illiteracy is rampant, and in the back country, few people understand the need for it. Richard Hanson is taught to read by an out of work ringmaster, and afterwards begs borrows, and screams for every book he can get his hands on. His Mother does not approve.
2333: The USS Kongo makes a brief stop at Baraboo on its first cruise. The crew is impressed by the feats of the aerialists. Richard Hanson is more impressed by the people from the stars. He spends a long night in rapped attention to a young ensign named Linda Clark. When the Kongo is ready to leave, Richard Hanson begs to be taken with them.
The Kongo takes the young man aboard. He pesters the crew half to death on how everything works. He dives into the knowledge banks with such single minded fervor that the Kongo's CMO, Kathryn DeBoise, has to make him come up for air, sleep and exercise. He is dropped aft Starbase 44 as a "refugee". Under the care of the Federation Refugee Office he is given a berth back to Earth, and once settled in proceeds to adsorb all the knowledge he can lay his hands on. Impressed by Doctor DeBoise he wants to be a Doctor himself.
2336: Hanson, having had to make up for is lack of a proper education applies to every medical school he can at age 20. His first bid is unsuccessful. Hanson cracks the books harder and brings his scores up.
2338: Richard Hanson is accepted at the University of Melbourne, College of Medicine.
2344: Hanson graduates medical school XMD, Doctor of Xenomedicne, with honors. Honors aside, he has difficulty finding a residency. His thoughts turn to Starfleet, they always need more Doctors. He applies to the Academy and is accepted. He attends the Officer Training School for professionals. He is graduated as a Lieutenant JG and receives his first assignment.
He begins his residency cruise on the USS Galen**, a Succor class hospital ship. Due to the nature of hospital ship duty is sees many places and many cases. By the time his four year residency period is over he is widely experienced in his field.
Officer Evaluation excellent. Promotion to full Lieutenant.
2348: Assigned to USS Potemkin an Excelsior class starship as a junior medical officer. The Potemkin undertakes a routine in Federation patrol. She has heavy contact with Orion, and Klingon pirates. While there he makes the acquaintance of a idealistic Lieutenant jg named Kirk. The two find common ground in ideas if not professions.
Officer Evaluation good Transfer to Starbase 222.
2353: Assigned to Starbase 222 Hanson continues his good work in the field. During the Starbase tour he is picked up by the USS Hood in route to a disabled liner. Hanson and the other Starbase doctors are instrumental in the rescue and recovery of the 1254 survivors. The Hood is awarded a Red Cross Unit Citation due to the harried and over crowded cruise back to Starbase 222. The award is shared by all the borrowed Doctors.
Officer Evaluation good.
2358: Assigned to the hospital ship USS Olympic. Hanson is a staff doctor on the biggest and newest of the hospital ships. As a senior Lieutenant he is given command of a shift of residents. He proves a capable administrator as well as doctor.
During is tenure he conducts research into the possibility of cross species blood replacement. Hanson rediscovers the forgotten Stoner Medical Systems research and develops a biologically neutral blood oxygenation replacer. This replicable substance will allow the blood of any species with iron based oxygenation to be supplemented with the replacer and water with the proper salts. This replacer will work for 48 hours before being flushed from the body. Hanson continues work on replacers for Copper and Boron based organisms. He is awarded the Vulcan Scientific Legion of Honor in Medicine for his work.
Officer Evaluation Good, promotion to Lt. Commander
2264: Hanson is made Director of Surgery on the USS Olympic. Short of a position as CMO on a starship, or the heights of CMO on a hospital ship (a full commander's berth) Hanson has it made as a Starfleet doctor.
2368: Hanson learns of the USS Kongo refitting at Mars with the position of CMO open. He also leans that the idealistic kid named Kirk is commanding her. Nostalgia overrides comfort. He applies for a transfer to the position and is assigned it.
The Kongo undertakes a mission to determine the fate of the Xanadu and the Sorceror. Both ships are located at NGC 23,234,235, renamed "Xanadu's Star". This white dwarf is will above the Galactic plane. The Kongo holds the record for travel above the Galactic plane. Both ships are successfully located, in destroyed condition.
Hanson begins study, assisted by Tathilan, into the psychology of "artificial" life forms. (Xanadu's Star)
2370: The Kongo is assigned to routine patrol in the Fresian Sector after a brief refit and inspection at El-Nanth Spacedock. Two months into the patrol an emergency call starts the Sixless incident.
2371: The Kongo is reassigned to the Sixless Resettlement project. (Journeys)
2373: Hanson completes is first tour of duty as CMO of the Kongo. He has presented a paper on the anatomy of the Sixless. As well as two papers on the psychology of computer sentience.
Officer Evaluationion Excellent. Continued posting as CMO of the USS Kongo.
2374: Freisan insurrectionist attempt to hold the Scientific community on Gramar 3, site of the future Sixliss homeworld. Hanson is deeply shocked when treating the "wounded" Tathilan. Emotions run form relief that is isn't killed to shock to find a crystal where her brain should have been. In the aftermath he performs an autopsy, with Tathilan's permission, on the ruined biomech. He learns a great deal about the technology that to date he has only read about.
Hanson takes an extended leave while the Kongo is undergoing refit at the El Nanth spacedock. He visits Earth and spends time with Admiral Kathryn DeBoise. She bullies him into attending a performance of the Baraboo Circus Red Troop. The Flying Hansons are in performance. Richard loses it and runs into the ring at the end of the performance. A tearful reunion follows in the backstage area. In the intervening years the Diva Tyrant has passed away. Richard is shocked by his Father's decline. Baraboo still does not enjoy the wealth of Federation medical science. He ends up taking the entire tribe out on the town. Many stories are exchanged as to what has happened in the time apart. The Senior Hanson invites his son to rejoin them. Richard is touched, but declines, explaining that he has a place in Starfleet, and people that depend on him. The departure is amicable in the end. Richard comes to terms with his past, and the family to terms with the prodigals decision. They ply him with tapes of their performances and a stage costume. He plys them with educational programs and extracts a promise they will be used.
2475: The USS Kongo resumes patrol in the Freisan Sector, in route she encounters a distress signal from the SS Skylark, in response to this she engages Ekosian and Darl ships in a running duel. The USS Kongo is severely damaged, all opposing ships are completely destroyed except the EKS John Gill, which is totally disabled. (The Eagle's Spawn)
The USS Kongo undergoes repairs at Starbase 140. (The Wages of Sin.)

*Circus World by Barry Longyear, and other titles. Baraboo and The City of Baraboo are from the excellent series of books by Barry Longyear. While Longyear has plainly in mind a very different setting from Star Trek, I adapt his concept to my Star Trek universe and gratefully acknowledge the origin of this most excellent idea.

**Galen c130AD - c200AD A Turkish doctor in ancient Rome. He produced what is considered the most advanced anatomy and medical books of the time. Due to the perverse nature of Roman law, killing a man for entertainment was fine, cutting his body up for research was not, most of Galen's anatomy work was done on Barbary Apes. As a result his books, while excellent scholarship, are riddled with errors. This work was the accepted medical text through the middle ages and not successfully challenged until the Renaissance.
